What to Wear: Engagement Shoot

The most common question I get asked before any shoot; What do I wear?

Your outfit choices can be a huge influence on setting the tone and feel of your shoot! It allows you to add that extra touch of personality and authenticity to your shoot.

But its also not quite as simple as just throwing on your favourite outfit and heading on your way. There are a few things to consider when putting together your outfits, whether its for your engagement, family, maternity, or empowerment shoot that can take your shoot to the next level.

Here are my 5 Tips to creating timeless, authentic and interesting looks:

1.Be comfortable and suit your setting
This is the MOST important part of deciding what to wear. You wanna feel like your most badass, beautiful, and confident version of yourself. Choose clothes that you know you look good in, something that you would wear if you had a special occasion and you wanted to feel extra spicy. Choose cuts and necklines that you know flatter you, colours that you feel comfortable wearing and styles that are similar to what you usually wear. This is our top rule so even if any of the following points don't adhere to this, feel free to disregard them and stay true to YOU. If you want to try something outrageous and out of your norm that is totally cool as well - if you feel COMFORTABLE doing that, that is ;) In this instance I would also bring an option that you feel super comfortable in and then the option that is more outside your comfort zone to try once you feel warmed up.

Match your outfit for any activity you might be doing or location. If going for a hike, wear your tramping gears, going the beach for a swim/surf, boardies and bikinis it is! Remember you can always bring 2 options, something casual and something dressy, so let one really match your environment, personal style and activity and the other be a bit more fancy, bold or extravagant.

2. Neutrals, neutrals, neutrals... Oh, And Earth tones…
They’re classics for a reason! Neutral colours look just about good on everyone, plus they make skin tones look just that much nicer and pair well with what ever location you have chosen as your backdrop. Earth tones and neutrals are also super timeless so your photos will look on trend till the end of time. Thats not to say you cant go bold and vibrant! Again if those brighter colours are more authentic to you and make you feel comfortable (rule 1) then go for it! I have seen it work Magic for those that know they rock a good vibrant purple ;)

3. Layers, accessories, outfit change and props

Hats, scarves, coats, belts and jewellery. These add depth, interest and extra unique touch to your fit. It also means you can get multiple looks without really changing clothes. Another way of bringing your own unique spice is to incorporate your passions into the shoot in the form of props or a “set”. If you a musical - bring your instrument. If you're foodies, make a picnic! If you like napping, make a bed up in a field and bring your favourite snack! This is only optional and totally not required, but if it sounds like a bit of fun then by all means go for it!

4. Compliment your S.O.

"you are sooooo good looking" is always a winner ;) But besides the usual compliments also in regards to style; You don't have to be full blown matchy matchy, but a little complimentary colours or matching of styles just helps makes you look more like a team and your photos look more cohesive.

5. Avoid big logos! Instead, opt for solid colours, subtle prints and patterns.

Those brands don't need your engagement photos as extra marketing material and super distracting elements like logos can distract from the focus of the shoot - YOU.

Floral prints have been something I have actually really loved seeing pop up in more engagement shoots, and opting for these subtle prints with a solid coloured cardigan or coat is always

Thats all from me folks!

At the end of the day, these photos are to represent and celebrate you and your love. Let your clothes simply be a reflection of that and aid you in feeling confident and comfortable and you’re all set to go!

Have an Epic shoot! Enjoy every moment of it!
